San Gennaro is the Patron Saint of Naples. He was born in Naples in the served as a bishop. In A.D. 305, he was beheaded near the spitting geysers of Vesuvius by Diocletian for refusing to worship pagan idols. Gennaro’s blood was collected by a local woman in two ampoules and his body was buried nearby. After Christianity became legal, the woman presented the blood to the cathedral. At that very moment Mt. Vesuvius erupted and the dried saint’s blood miraculously liquefied for the first time. Today, the blood still continues to liquefy almost according to schedule every first Saturday before the first Sunday of May, on his Feast Day September 19, and on December 16.

Because San Gennaro is the Patron Saint of Napoli, he is revered by the large Italian population of New York City.
