A classic Della Robbia styled plaque featuring the Virgin Mary and Christ Child surrounded by white lilies.
The Della Robbia technique, known for its brilliant glazed terracotta sculptures featuring brilliant opaque whites and deep cerulean blues, was developed by Luca della Robbia in the 15th century in Florence, Italy. Luca shared the technique with his brother Andrea della Robbia and his nephews. The technique remained a closely guarded family secret for about a century before it was lost.
The technique was later rediscovered during the Victorian era. This renewed interest in the Renaissance, and in the Della Robbia family's work specifically, led to the technique being studied and adopted by Italian ceramic workshops.
