Create your own Neapolitan nativity scene within this village scene which includes a fountain and cave for the Christ Child. Handcrafted in Naples by expert nativity scene artists.
The Neapolitan tradition of making nativity scenes, known as presepe, is a blend of sacred and secular elements that reflects the city's culture and daily life. The tradition dates back to the 13th century, when Saint Francis of Assisi is said to have commissioned the first nativity scene. The tradition of the nativity quickly spread through Italy and the first documented nativity scene in the Naples area was in Amalfi in 1324.
During the 18th century, under the Bourbon monarchy, that the Presepe Napoletano blossomed into an art form celebrated by all classes of Neapolitan society. Unlike traditional nativity scenes, which focus purely on the Holy Family, the Neapolitan presepe reflects everyday life in Naples. Alongside Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus, you will find an array of colorful characters, including street vendors, musicians, and even animals; all engaged in typical Neapolitan life.
